What ever happened to the 'H' 'F' cast letters that were on the wall of Fowlers House on Lodge Lane pre the estate being built there? If lost could new ones be cast and fixed to the wall at the bus stop?
David, sorry we were not aware of any such adornment on the wall of Henry Fowlers house on Lodge Lane! Do any other visitor to the website have knowledge of such?
Before the housing estate was built the wall on the estate side of Lodge Lane went down to the land set aside for the By-Pass, where a gated vehicle access to the Hall was. Around about where Gascoigne Drive is there was a small, pedestrian gate way in the wall for pedestrian visitors to the Hall. Either side of the opening there was a capital letter 'H' on one side of the opening and an 'F' on the other, church side of the wall. The letters were about a foot tall, perhaps two inch lettering and about an inch thick, possibly drop forged, or cast.
David, thanks for adding to our knowledge about Henry Fowler's residence on Lodge Lane. There's 1956 photo which shows a gateway which I assume was the one you refer to. This is on our website but I copy it again below. I wonder if any close up photographs exist showing the plaques.
It would have been somewhere around where the cyclists are, to the best of my memory. For years from my childhood the letters meant nothing to me, it was only when I learnt the Sir Henry Fowler, who I only knew from train-spotting days as the Midland Railway Engineer, actually lived here in Spondon, when I put 2 and 2 together. Of coarse, by then it was far too late. SADLY!

The view illustrated is of the re-shaped vehicle entrance. The pedestrian entrance I refer to is/was further up the road.

David , Where abouts was the gateway then? Does this photo of Lodge lane in 1965 help?
