Meeting Dates

The Spondon Historical Society meet regularly at Spondon Village Hall for a variety of talks, presentations and discussions.

Meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month and start at 7.30pm. Anyone is welcome to come along to the meetings with visitors paying a small admission charge. Details of our forthcoming meetings are as follows:

 

Visit to Elvaston Castle

Society visit to Elvaston Castle and Gardens for guided tour by members of the Friends of Elvaston Castle & Gardens Charitable Trust. This will include some rooms of the house as well as the extensive gardens. Meet 10.30 am. Parking will be allowed for our party at the rear of the castle near the stables, access via the cricket ground. Twenty places max. Cost £13. Please contact our secretary to book your place.

Village Guided Walk

A leisurely stroll around Spondon village to view items of interest and be reminded of those that have vanished! Meet near the Library /Village Hall at 6pm . It will finish about 7pm at the Malt Shovel Inn on Potter Street.  No booking necessary, just turn up. 

Spondon Railway Station Visit

Early evening visit hosted by the volunteers of The Friends of Spondon Station courtesy of East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Network Rail (NR). It will include a short return journey by an EMR train service to either Beeston or Duffield to view the work of the volunteers at those stations. For more details contact the society secretary.

Joseph Paxton
Danny Wells talks about Joseph Paxton, described by Charles Dickens as the busiest man in England. Paxton was a designer of gardens, conservatories, parks and much more.

Derbyshire by the Sea
No Derbyshire is not by the sea, but Liz Keeley entertains us with stories of Derbyshire's connections to the sea.
