Spondon Station Master, Henry Ernest HAINES, was killed on 13th August 1924 when a lorry crashed into the station building. As the lorry came over the canal bridge on Station Road the driver saw that the level crossing gates were closed to the road and his brakes failed. He swerved into the station building through the wall behind which sat Mr. Haines at his desk killing him outright. He is buried in Spondon Cemetery.
